Music at Bolton School

Bolton music instructor, Mr. Ethan Sheils, talks enthusiastically about the active musical program, the help from outside organizations and groups, and the large number of quality instruments available to students.

Bolton’s Orchestra
The Orchestra consists of ten to twelve members from the 5th through 8th grades. There is also a beginners group consisting of twenty 4th and 5th graders.

Students, with parental permission, audition toward the end of September. The only limitation is the number of instruments. And there are many - 30 violins, for example.

Orchestra Leader

Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) students provide one-on-one and group lessons to children in Orchestra at Bolton School. By providing these schools with student teachers, CIM hopes to cause the children to develop confidence in their playing, a connection with young adults in the community and a deeper love for music.

Another boon to the music department has been help from VH1 Save the Music Foundation. The Foundation provides complete band, string, keyboard, or guitar programs to benefiting schools. It is their belief that by providing instruments and not funding, their contribution will be used for its intended purpose: the restoration of public school music programs. More than 80% of every dollar marked for the VH1 Save the Music Foundation finds its way into a child’s hand in the form of a musical instrument.

Bolton’s Choir
The Choir consists of twelve 6th through 8th graders. They also audition for inclusion. The choir will be performing at the 8th grade graduation to be held from 4:40 to 6 p.m. on June 6, 2005 at Karamu

  Bolton School Choir

Sheils, who is working on his National Board Certification, has used both the orchestra and choir for his example programs and teaching.

Chess at Bolton School

Sample Chess Board   Bolton reading and science teacher, Mr. Adam Holtz, works with 6th through 8th grade students interested in learning and perfecting their chess games. There are about twelve students who come regularly once a week to play. They are also allowed to take chess sets home for practice and fun.

Bolton chess players have competed in the Cleveland School District Chess Tournament. Four different players compete each week and in 2003-2004, the Bolton teams tied for 8th place. In the singles chess competition, Danny Blair placed second. This year, they tied for 10th place.
